The quest for a decent, affordable dashcam.

I’ve been fascinated by the idea of a dashcam after that incident in Russia a few years ago when a meteor exploded over some remote town in Siberia. I’ve had a series of cheap-ish dash cams over the last few years and frankly, they have all let me down.

Cam you hear me?

My most recent attempt was the one pictured above, the SwissGear something or other. Quite frankly, it’s rubbish. They claim it is a 1080p device but my Palm Pilot from 2001 took better video and it had a 0.3 megapixel camera. It really is quite terrible from a video quality perspective. The body has got a cheap plastic feel about it. There does not seem to be an option for it to switch into night mode, one has to press a button to get it to swap. This seems daft.

On the plus side, it comes with a long cable, accepts up to a 64GB SD card and is quite small so it does not obscure your view of the road much at all.

Would I recommend? No, unless you want to feel like it is 2001 all over again.
